Did you know that the name ping pong came about thanks to a table tennis ball? It was invented by the Hamley brothers from London – a combination of the word “ping”, which means hitting the ball, and the sound the ball makes when it hits the table – “pong”. This small, inconspicuous object is the most important element of the game of ping pong. While we can cope creatively without a table and a racket, we are lost without a ball. It is therefore worth stocking up on a supply of balls for the game – experienced players know best how quickly they disappear.
Contrary to appearances, you will find many types of ping pong balls on the market. Choosing the right one, similarly to buying a racket, will increase the comfort of the game. What to look for when buying a table tennis ball?
- Diameter – should be 4 cm. This is the approved size of the ball that is used every day during competitions. So try to choose a product of this size. It is worth knowing that the smaller the ball, the faster it will be.
- Weight – should be 2.7g (this is how much a standard ball weighs). In stores you will also find heavier models and those that weigh less.
- Material – try to choose a celluloid ball for the game, or plastic. Avoid rubber balls.
- Hardness – you will find balls of different hardnesses on the market – harder ones are more comfortable for offensive play, softer ones for defensive play. To start with, it is worth choosing a model with universal hardness.
- Quality – a poorly made ball will make it much more difficult or even impossible to play. So when choosing, make sure that the joints are not protruding. Ideally, they should not be felt under the finger.
- Stars – refer to the product classification. 1 star means a ball that meets the MFTS requirements – such balls are used by players during competitions. 2 stars classify the ball as a product for intermediate recreational play, 3 stars is a ball intended for beginners.
- Ball Color - If you are playing recreationally, it probably won't matter much what color the ping pong ball is. As a curiosity, it's worth knowing that officially, orange and white balls are used to play table tennis. You use white balls if you are playing on a green table, orange balls on a blue table. If you are playing for fun, you can choose any color, of course remembering that it should be of good quality and provide comfort of play.
